Walter Leroy Harper, aged 65, and his wife Carrlene Harper were tragically shot to death on August 31, 1993, at the Borrego Springs home of a longtime friend. Walter, a San Diego native, had retired from his work at the family-owned QRS sign company. The couple, known for their fun-loving and purposeful nature, were honored by nearly 500 people at a memorial service in La Jolla.
