Thomas Benton Worley, a 32-year-old officer with the Los Angeles County Safety Police, tragically lost his life on December 21, 1994. Officer Worley was off duty and shopping with his wife at a shoe store located at the intersection of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Roscoe Boulevard when he observed a robbery in progress. Demonstrating his commitment to public safety, Worley intervened and ordered the suspect, Jesus Mario Valenzuela, to the ground.
Unfortunately, Valenzuela opened fire, striking Worley. Despite being mortally wounded, Worley managed to return fire, fatally wounding Valenzuela as well.
The incident left a profound impact on the community and the law enforcement fraternity. More than 1,000 relatives, friends, and colleagues attended Worley's memorial and burial services on December 29, 1994. The services were marked by deep sorrow and respect for Worley's bravery and dedication. His wife, Pam Worley, and their two-year-old son, along with Worley's six-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, were among the mourners. The funeral procession included 40 motorcycles leading a large convoy of police vehicles to Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, where Worley was laid to rest with full honors, including a 21-gun salute and the playing of "Taps".
Worley's death was a significant loss to the Los Angeles County Safety Police, where he had served for 1.5 years. His colleagues remembered him as a dedicated and highly respected officer. The incident also highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, even when off duty. The community and his fellow officers expressed their pride in his actions and their deep sorrow at his untimely death. His mother, the Rev. Dorothy Worley, spoke of his sense of justice and commitment to serving others, urging mourners to cherish his memory.
The case did not involve further arrests or litigation, as the suspect, Jesus Mario Valenzuela, was killed during the exchange of gunfire with Officer Worley. The incident was a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers take to protect their communities, and it underscored the importance of honoring their sacrifices.
