James Warren Lehmann Jr., a Deputy Sheriff with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, tragically lost his life on January 5, 1997, at the age of 42. Lehmann, along with his partner Deputy Michael Haugen, responded to a domestic violence call in the early hours of the morning near Sagebrush Avenue and Chaparral Road in Whitewater, Riverside County. As they approached the scene, they were ambushed by a sniper armed with an M-1 rifle. The assailant fired multiple shots, striking both deputies.
