Nicholas "Nick" Samuel Markowitz, a 15-year-old from West Hills, Los Angeles, was tragically murdered on August 9, 2000, in the Santa Ynez Mountains near Goleta, California. His death was the result of a feud over a $1,200 drug debt between his older half-brother, Benjamin Markowitz, and Jesse James Hollywood, a mid-level drug dealer. The conflict escalated when Hollywood, along with his friends Jesse Rugge and William Skidmore, decided to confront Benjamin.
On August 6, 2000, while en route to confront Benjamin, they encountered Nicholas walking on the side of the road and impulsively decided to abduct him as leverage.
Nicholas was forcibly taken into a van and transported to Santa Barbara, where he was held captive for several days. During this period, he was given drugs and alcohol and attended various house parties with his captors. Despite being seen by numerous witnesses, including parents and teenagers, no one reported his presence to the authorities. Hollywood initially planned to release Nicholas, but after realizing the severe legal consequences of kidnapping, he decided to have Nicholas killed to eliminate any potential witnesses.
Hollywood enlisted Ryan Hoyt, a member of his gang who owed him money, to carry out the murder. Hoyt was given a TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun and instructed to kill Nicholas as a way to settle his debt. On the night of August 8, 2000, Hoyt, Rugge, and Graham Pressley drove Nicholas to the Lizard’s Mouth trail in the Santa Ynez Mountains. Pressley had previously dug a shallow grave at the site. Upon arrival, Rugge bound Nicholas's hands and covered his mouth with duct tape. Hoyt then struck Nicholas in the head with a shovel, causing him to fall into the grave, and subsequently shot him nine times.
Nicholas's body was discovered on August 12, 2000, by hikers. The investigation quickly led to the arrests of Hoyt, Rugge, Skidmore, and Pressley. Jesse James Hollywood managed to evade capture for several years, fleeing to Brazil, where he was eventually apprehended in 2005. The legal proceedings that followed were extensive. Ryan Hoyt was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. Jesse Rugge was convicted of kidnapping and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. William Skidmore received a nine-year sentence for his involvement, while Graham Pressley, who was a minor at the time, was sentenced to juvenile detention until he turned 25. Jesse James Hollywood was extradited to the United States, where he was convicted of kidnapping and first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
