David Alan Powell, a 42-year-old deputy sheriff with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, tragically lost his life on November 30, 2002, in Artesia, California. On that fateful day, Deputy Powell and his partner responded to reports of gunshots near 166th Street and Elaine Avenue at approximately 10:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they observed a man fleeing into a home and taking a woman hostage.
