An exchange of words ensued between Chavez and the two men, which quickly escalated. The men then shot Chavez multiple times before fleeing north on Gundry Avenue.
Chavez was rushed to a hospital by his family members, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Chavez's death revealed that he was a member of the Paramount Varrio San Streets (San Streets) gang, a primarily Hispanic gang. The area where Chavez was killed was claimed by the Gundry Bloc Crips, a predominantly African-American gang. The rivalry between these gangs played a significant role in the events leading up to Chavez's death. On the day before the shooting, Chavez had tagged a wall in the neighborhood with gang-related graffiti, which likely provoked the confrontation.

Witnesses provided descriptions of the two men involved, and one of the suspects was later identified as Obed Estrada. Estrada was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
