Julio Ramirez, a 21-year-old Latino man, tragically lost his life on July 29, 2007, in Paramount, California. The incident occurred during a family gathering on the evening of July 28, 2007, when Ramirez and another young man, Benjamin Velasco, were shot by drive-by gunmen. The shooting took place in the 15300 block of Hayter Avenue, a neighborhood known for gang activity.
Both victims were transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where Velasco succumbed to his injuries early on July 29, and Ramirez passed away a few hours later.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was gang-related, with the suspects identified as members of the Paramount Barrio gang. Luis Jesus Rodriguez, a documented gang member, was found guilty of the murders. On the night of the shooting, Rodriguez armed himself with an AK-47 and, along with his brother Daniel Cowie and another accomplice, Irvin Heredia, drove to the neighborhood of a rival gang. Rodriguez exited the vehicle and opened fire, first targeting Velasco and then Ramirez as he attempted to flee. The assailants then fled the scene in their vehicle.
Rodriguez was arrested on July 31, 2007, and was later convicted of two counts of first-degree murder. The jury found that the killings were committed to further the activities of a criminal street gang and that Rodriguez had a prior conviction for first-degree murder. In addition to the murders of Ramirez and Velasco, Rodriguez was also convicted of the fatal shooting of Salvador Avila Jr. in June 2007. Rodriguez was sentenced to death for his crimes.
Daniel Cowie, who drove the getaway vehicle, was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. Irvin Heredia, who was a passenger in the car, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received an 11-year prison sentence. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in the area and the devastating impact it has on the community. The convictions of Rodriguez, Cowie, and Heredia brought some measure of justice to the families of the victims, but the loss of young lives like Julio Ramirez's remains a poignant reminder of the need for continued efforts to combat gang-related crime.
