Salvador Avila Jr., a 19-year-old from Paramount, California, tragically lost his life on June 24, 2007. Avila, a high school graduate from Compton, was at a local Tam's restaurant on Alondra Boulevard when the incident occurred. He was there with a friend who got into a physical altercation with other Latino men. During the fight, Avila's friend was knocked unconscious.
Avila, who did not intend to engage in the fight, attempted to help his friend by pulling him off the ground and getting him to a car. It was during this act of assistance that Avila was shot multiple times, leading to his death at 2 a.m. that Sunday.
The investigation into Avila's death was led by Sheriff's detectives Ray Lugo and Joe Ramirez. They identified Luis Rodriguez, 24, and Adrian Chavez, 27, as the primary suspects. Rodriguez, who was identified as the shooter, was also implicated in a double murder in Paramount that occurred a little over a month after Avila's death. Rodriguez and Chavez were involved in the initial fight with Avila's friend, and Rodriguez was later charged with Avila's murder. The case was cleared by the detectives, and Rodriguez was arrested a few days after the double murder of Julio Ramirez and Benjamin Velasco on July 28, 2007.
Luis Rodriguez, a documented gang member, was convicted of Avila's murder in 2008 and sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison. His involvement in the double murder further solidified his criminal activities, leading to additional charges and a death sentence for the killings of Velasco and Ramirez. Rodriguez's brother, Daniel Cowie, was also convicted for his role in the double murder, serving as the getaway driver, and was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. Another accomplice, Irvin Heredia, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received an 11-year prison sentence.
