Michelle Marie Fournier, a 48-year-old resident of Huntington Beach, California, tragically lost her life on October 12, 2011, in a mass shooting at Salon Meritage in Seal Beach. Fournier, a licensed cosmetologist, was one of eight victims in what became the deadliest mass killing in Orange County history. The incident occurred around 1:21 PM when the shooter, armed with multiple firearms, entered the salon and began firing indiscriminately at employees and customers.
The attack lasted approximately two minutes, during which six people were declared dead at the scene, and three others were transported to a hospital, where two later succumbed to their injuries. The sole survivor of the shooting was a customer who was severely injured but managed to recover.
The perpetrator of this horrific crime was identified as Scott Evans Dekraai, Fournier's ex-husband. Dekraai and Fournier had been embroiled in a bitter custody battle over their 8-year-old son, which is believed to have been a significant factor leading to the shooting. On the morning of the incident, Dekraai had a heated argument with Fournier over the phone regarding their custody dispute. Later that day, he arrived at the salon wearing body armor and armed with three handguns, including a 9mm Springfield, a .45-caliber Heckler & Koch, and a .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson Model 29. Dekraai was arrested without incident shortly after the shooting, about half a mile from the crime scene.
The legal proceedings following the shooting were extensive. Dekraai pleaded guilty to the murders on May 2, 2014, and on September 22, 2017, he was sentenced to eight consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, plus an additional seven years to life for attempted murder. The case drew significant media attention and led to discussions about gun control and domestic violence. A candlelight vigil was held the day after the shooting to honor the victims, and a fund was established to aid their families, raising around $400,000. The Salon Meritage was remodeled and reopened under the same name in November 2012, serving as a symbol of resilience for the community.
