Richard Carlos Rodriguez, a 17-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on November 20, 2011, in Wilmington, Los Angeles. The case took a significant turn when Misty Marie Magallon, a 25-year-old Latina, was arrested two days after the killing. Magallon, who was previously known to live in the neighborhood, was identified by a witness who saw her running through the alley with a gun in her hand shortly after the shooting. The witness recognized Magallon not only by her appearance but also by a distinctive tattoo of a “W” on her neck, which stood for the Westside Wilmas, a gang that both Magallon and Rodriguez were associated with.
Magallon was charged with first-degree murder with an allegation that she intentionally discharged a firearm causing death. During the trial, which lasted five days, the prosecution presented evidence that Magallon had walked up to Rodriguez and shot him more than 20 times. The jury deliberated for a little over three hours before convicting Magallon. On May 13, 2014, she was sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison. The case highlighted the impact of gang violence in the area and the bravery of witnesses who came forward to testify despite the risks involved.
