Darell Alviar Esguerra, a 25-year-old Filipino, tragically lost his life on August 10, 2014, in Tracy, California. The incident occurred during a birthday party hosted by the Esguerra family. According to reports, armed men fired approximately 20 shots into the family’s home, striking Esguerra in the back of the head. He was found unconscious by the responding officers and was rushed to San Joaquin General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two hours later.
Witnesses recounted that the family was celebrating when the assailants opened fire, leading to the fatal injury of Esguerra.
The investigation into Esguerra's death revealed that it was an apparent robbery attempt. Three men from San Jose, identified as Terrence Boone, Christon Jones, and Sedrick Hutchinson, were arrested in connection with the murder. Boone was apprehended during a traffic stop in Milpitas, while Jones and Hutchinson were arrested in San Jose. The suspects faced multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and robbery. Boone was also charged with the intentional and personal discharge of a firearm with great bodily injury, among other offenses. The arrests were made after investigators provided information on the suspects' whereabouts, leading to their capture.
The tragic event marked Tracy's first homicide in nearly two years. Esguerra's cousin, Jerick Bali, recounted that he was leaving the home when a car drove by, made a U-turn, and stopped. Two men with handguns exited the vehicle, and one of them pushed Bali against his car, demanding money. When Esguerra approached, the assailants began shooting, with one of the bullets striking Esguerra in the head. Bali believed that Esguerra was trying to protect him, as the bullet was likely intended for Bali. The community was left in shock, and Esguerra's family and friends mourned the loss of a beloved individual who was described as kind and well-loved by those who knew him.
The case garnered significant attention, with the Esguerra family and the community calling for justice. Fundraising campaigns were launched to support the family financially and raise awareness about the incident.
