Maria Ines Morales, a 45-year-old Latina, was tragically killed on August 11, 2014, in her home located in the 14000 block of Herron Street in Sylmar, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Morales was fatally shot multiple times. The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. when her son called 911 to report that his father was firing a gun inside their home. Upon arrival, officers found Maria Ines Morales in the living room with multiple gunshot wounds.
They also discovered her husband, Albino Topete Morales, in a bedroom, lying on a mattress with a Colt .45-caliber pistol on a table nearby and a handwritten note in Spanish. Albino Morales, who had been married to Maria for over 25 years, was taken into custody without a struggle. It was noted that he had been drinking heavily at the time of the incident.
The investigation revealed that Albino Topete Morales, aged 59 at the time, believed his wife was cheating on him, which led to the fatal shooting. On August 14, 2014, Albino Morales was charged with murder by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. He was scheduled to be arraigned on September 11, 2014. The case proceeded to trial, and on December 9, 2015, Albino Morales was found guilty of first-degree murder and one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling. Jurors also found true the special allegation that he used a handgun in the killing. During the shooting, a bullet traveled into a neighbor’s home, causing damage to multiple rooms while a family was watching TV.
On February 26, 2016, Albino Topete Morales was sentenced to 35 years to life in state prison for the murder of his wife. The sentencing marked the culmination of a tragic case that highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence and the severe consequences of such actions. The case drew attention to the importance of addressing issues related to domestic abuse and ensuring justice for victims.
