Eddy Marshall Lewis Jr., a 28-year-old man from Los Angeles, was tragically shot and killed on October 25, 2014. The incident occurred in the 8300 block of South Hoover Street in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood. According to reports, Lewis was dropping off a friend around 12:30 a.m. when gunfire erupted from the sidewalk. His friend, a 33-year-old man, was also wounded but managed to run to a nearby residence and call 911.
Unfortunately, Lewis was struck while still in his car, which rolled to a stop at the curb. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.
The investigation into Lewis's death revealed that the gunman approached from the sidewalk and opened fire without any warning or provocation. The Los Angeles Police Department's Criminal Gang Homicide Division took charge of the case, suspecting that Lewis and his friend might have been mistaken for gang members. Despite extensive efforts, including a $75,000 reward approved by the LA City Council for information leading to an arrest, the case remains unsolved. Detective Dean Vinluan, who has been actively seeking leads, believes that the shooter misidentified Lewis and his friend as threats due to their unfamiliarity in the area.
Lewis's family has been deeply affected by his untimely death. His mother, Celestine Lewis, described him as a kind and generous person who had a passion for helping others. Eddy was an assistant football coach at Morningside High School and aspired to become a registered nurse. His family continues to mourn his loss and hopes for justice. The community and law enforcement officials urge anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of solving this case to bring closure to Lewis's loved ones.
