Derrick Williams, a 23-year-old man from Sacramento, California, was tragically killed on January 1, 2015, in Oakland. The incident occurred at a Valero gas station located at 7225 Bancroft Avenue. Williams was involved in a drug deal that turned fatal when he and his accomplice, Stanford Boatner, attempted to sell Xanax pills to a group of men. The transaction quickly escalated into violence when one of the buyers, Andre Poole, decided to rob Williams instead of completing the purchase.
Poole snatched a gold chain from Williams' neck and, during the ensuing struggle, fatally shot him. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Williams' death led to the arrest and charging of three individuals: Andre Poole, Marcus Mayfield, and Dwight Hilton. Poole, who had prior convictions for robbery and firearm possession, was charged with first-degree murder with the special circumstance of committing a murder during the course of a robbery. He was found guilty and is expected to receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Mayfield, who was also involved in the incident, faced charges of second-degree murder and attempted voluntary manslaughter for his role in the shooting. He entered a plea agreement that resulted in a 20-year to life prison sentence. Hilton, initially charged with murder, had those charges dismissed but pleaded no contest to second-degree robbery in an unrelated case and is serving a seven-year sentence.
