Dexter Jerome Barnett, a 42-year-old resident of Salinas, California, tragically lost his life on January 10, 2015. Barnett, originally from Foley, Alabama, was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend. His death was the result of a violent confrontation that escalated into a fatal shooting. On the night of his death, Barnett had an altercation with Angel Ramirez, a 25-year-old member of the Norteno gang, at the Chin Brothers Market on North Main Street in Salinas.
The confrontation began after Barnett, who was associated with the Crips, referred to Ramirez as "cuz," a term that Ramirez found disrespectful given the gang dynamics in the area.
Following the initial confrontation, Ramirez left the market but returned later with other gang members. Barnett, who had his 11-year-old son with him at the time, was able to leave the market safely. However, later that evening, Barnett returned to the vicinity of the Happy to be Nappy barbershop in Chinatown, where Ramirez ambushed him. Ramirez, hiding in the shadows, shot Barnett four times with a .45 caliber semi-automatic Glock pistol. Barnett succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while his son was not present during the shooting.
The investigation into Barnett's murder was thorough, involving the analysis of surveillance footage which played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending Ramirez. The case was prosecuted by the Monterey County District Attorney's Office, with Deputy District Attorney Brian Jones leading the charge. Ramirez was convicted of first-degree murder with gang and weapon special allegations, which added significant time to his sentence. In February 2020, Ramirez was sentenced to 54 years to life in prison. This sentence also included an additional four years for a 2017 attack on a fellow Norteno gang member while Ramirez was incarcerated at the Monterey County Jail.
The trial and subsequent sentencing brought a measure of closure to Barnett's family, who expressed a range of emotions during the court proceedings. They conveyed their sadness and anger, but also spoke of forgiveness and sympathy for Ramirez's family, acknowledging the dual loss experienced by both families due to the lengthy prison sentence. Ramirez will be eligible for parole at the age of 79, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the impact on the community.
