On April 18, 2015, Somkeo Thongkhamvilay, aged 58, was tragically shot and killed in Fresno, California. The incident occurred in a field near Chestnut and Adams Avenues, where Thongkhamvilay and Rattana Chounramany, aged 47, were found dead. The double homicide was discovered by deputies responding to a welfare check. The investigation quickly revealed that the motive behind the murders was a perceived love triangle.
Leuth Sengsongkham, the husband of Chounramany, suspected that his wife was having an affair with Thongkhamvilay. This suspicion led Sengsongkham to commit the heinous act of shooting both victims in a fit of jealousy and rage.
Following the murders, Sengsongkham fled Fresno County and was later apprehended in Henderson, Nevada. He turned himself in to the local police department, where he confessed to the crime. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office, along with the assistance of the Air Support Unit, conducted a thorough investigation, leading to Sengsongkham's extradition back to Fresno County to face charges.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Sengsongkham was charged with two counts of murder. The Fresno County District Attorney's Office prosecuted the case, and a jury found Sengsongkham guilty of the second-degree murder of his wife, Rattana Chounramany, and the first-degree murder of Somkeo Thongkhamvilay. The jury also determined that Sengsongkham had used a firearm during the commission of the murders. As a result, Sengsongkham faced a potential sentence of up to 90 years to life in prison. However, under the Elderly Parole Program, he would be eligible for early release after serving 25 years.
The case highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the extreme measures that can result from jealousy and suspicion.
