Douglas Jerome Wilson Jr., a 37-year-old resident of Long Beach, California, tragically lost his life on June 22, 2015. On that fateful morning, Long Beach police officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 800 block of Chestnut Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Wilson in the alley behind his apartment, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Despite their efforts, Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 8:51 a.m.
The initial investigation revealed that Wilson had been shot during an altercation in the alleyway, but no immediate arrests were made, and suspect information was scarce at the time.
The case took a significant turn when, more than two months after the incident, Long Beach police officers pulled over a vehicle and recognized Jorge Luis Rodriguez Cruz, who was a passenger in the car. Cruz attempted to flee but was apprehended and subsequently charged with the murder of Douglas Jerome Wilson Jr. According to prosecutors, on the morning of the shooting, Cruz was causing a disturbance in the alleyway when two women confronted him. During this confrontation, Cruz directed his aggression towards Wilson, who was passing by. The situation escalated, and despite attempts by the women to defuse the tension, Cruz pulled out a handgun and shot Wilson, resulting in his immediate death.
The legal proceedings that followed saw Cruz being found guilty of first-degree murder on November 15, 2017. The jury also upheld a special allegation that Cruz had used a handgun in the commission of the crime. As a result, Cruz was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison on February 21, 2018.
