Anthony Carlos, a 22-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on August 27, 2015, near La Calandria Drive and Lombardy Boulevard in El Sereno, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, the incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. while Carlos was in a white pickup truck stopped at an intersection. A man in a dark-colored SUV drove up behind him, and after an exchange of words, the gunman shot Carlos. Carlos attempted to exit his truck but was shot again.
He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:44 p.m.
The investigation quickly identified Fernando Ortiz, a 31-year-old Latino, as the suspect. Witnesses provided crucial information that led to Ortiz's arrest the following day at his girlfriend’s apartment in El Monte. Ortiz attempted to flee but was apprehended by the police. He was charged with one count of murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Ortiz pleaded not guilty on September 16, 2015, and was scheduled to return to court on October 20, 2015.
The case against Ortiz was built on witness testimonies and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office pursued the charges, emphasizing the severity of the crime.
