A promising university student’s life was cut short in a violent encounter just days before Christmas. Nineteen-year-old Jonathan Tobash, a male sophomore at Morgan State University, was fatally shot on the evening of December 18, 2017, in Northeast Baltimore. He was walking to a corner store in the 3500 block of Pelham Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m.
when he happened upon a robbery already in progress outside the establishment.
The two individuals committing the robbery turned their attention to Tobash. A struggle ensued, and Tobash was shot multiple times in the torso. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he did not survive his injuries. Friends and family remembered the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute graduate as a motivated and positive individual who was studying engineering and was the youngest of four siblings.
In the wake of the shooting, Baltimore police launched an investigation and believed the perpetrators might have been responsible for a series of robberies in the area. Authorities released surveillance footage showing two suspects, appealing to the public for assistance in identifying them. A reward was offered for information leading to an arrest. Despite these efforts and the circulation of the suspects' images, there have been no subsequent news reports indicating that any arrests have been made or that any suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the murder of Jonathan Tobash. His case is one of many that contributed to a record-setting year for homicides in Baltimore in 2017.
