Domingo Esteban, a 26-year-old resident of Riverside, California, tragically lost his life on October 23, 2015, in a violent shooting incident. Esteban, along with Juan Antonio Bartolo, 45, was walking near Kansas Avenue and Seventh Street when two men exited a vehicle and opened fire on them. The attack occurred just after 9:30 p.m., resulting in Bartolo being pronounced dead at the scene, while Esteban and another individual were rushed to Riverside Community Hospital.
Unfortunately, Esteban succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The Riverside Police Department confirmed that none of the victims had any gang affiliations, and the motive behind the shooting was initially unclear.
The investigation into the murders of Domingo Esteban and Juan Antonio Bartolo revealed that the attack was a random, gang-motivated shooting. After a year-long investigation, Riverside police arrested Antoine Deshawn James, 39, of Bakersfield, and Abiance Linece Turner, 25, of San Diego, on December 21, 2016. Both suspects were charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and special-circumstance allegations, including taking multiple lives in the same crime, killing a witness to a crime, and committing a murder for the benefit of a criminal street gang. Additionally, James faced charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The suspects were held without bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
The prosecution alleged that the attack was racially motivated and carried out for the benefit of a street gang. The third victim, Francisco Ramirez, survived the shooting despite being shot through the cheeks. The Riverside County District Attorney's Office stated that the suspects were looking to shoot people randomly that night, and the victims were unfortunate to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured one of the shooters walking briskly with a handgun shortly after the killings. Despite the identification of the suspects within a month of the shooting, it took investigators another year to gather sufficient evidence to file charges.
In January 2017, Antoine Deshawn James and Abiance Linece Turner pleaded not guilty to the charges. A third suspect, Anthony Lovell Eddington II, was fatally shot by law enforcement officers during an attempted arrest in Fresno County. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in Riverside's Eastside neighborhood, which had been plagued by similar incidents in the past. The tragic deaths of Domingo Esteban and Juan Antonio Bartolo underscored the senseless nature of gang-related violence and the devastating impact it has on communities.
