Jerrad Cardae Scott, a 24-year-old man from La Mesa, California, was tragically killed on January 17, 2016, in a double homicide that also claimed the life of his girlfriend, Emily Anna Fox. The incident occurred in the 7600 block of Oso Avenue in Winnetka, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, officers responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, they discovered both Scott and Fox with fatal gunshot wounds inside the residence. Fox had managed to call 911 before the shooting, reporting that her ex-boyfriend was at the home with a gun.
The investigation quickly identified Brian Anthony Gonzales, also known as Brian Hammond, as the primary suspect. Gonzales, a 24-year-old man, was apprehended two days later on January 19, 2016, while attempting to flee on a bus in Southern California. The Los Angeles Police Department described the motive behind the killings as a case of extreme jealousy. Gonzales had confronted the couple in the hallway of Fox's apartment building, where he shot both victims. Scott attempted to escape but was chased down by Gonzales, who then brought him back at gunpoint before killing both Scott and Fox.
The legal proceedings against Gonzales culminated in a conviction. On February 10, 2020, Gonzales was found guilty of the murders of Emily Fox and Jerrad Scott. The jury deliberated for approximately three hours before delivering the verdict. Gonzales was convicted on multiple counts, including murder during the commission of a kidnapping and multiple murders, with an additional gun allegation. The court sentenced Gonzales to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as prosecutors had decided not to seek the death penalty. The case was marked by its tragic nature, with LAPD Chief Charlie Beck describing it as "jealousy gone way wrong."
The deaths of Jerrad Scott and Emily Fox were a profound loss to their families and communities. Scott, a former star football player at Monte Vista High School, was remembered for his athletic prowess and the potential he had shown in his youth. The double homicide and subsequent legal proceedings highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence and the extreme consequences of unchecked jealousy and rage. The case remains a somber reminder of the importance of addressing and preventing such violent acts.
