Ty Barrera, a 20-year-old resident of Paradise, California, tragically lost his life on February 6, 2016. The incident occurred in the 9200 block of the Skyway, where Paradise police responded to an emergency call. Upon arrival, officers found Barrera suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. The investigation quickly identified Alex Edward McClintock, a 27-year-old from Paradise, as the primary suspect in the shooting. Witnesses at the scene provided crucial information that led to McClintock being named as the suspect. However, by the time officers arrived, McClintock had already fled the scene.
The search for McClintock involved multiple law enforcement agencies, and he was eventually apprehended on February 18, 2016, in San Jose by a fugitive apprehension team from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. McClintock was then transported back to Butte County to face charges related to the murder of Ty Barrera. The charges against McClintock included murder, multiple counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition by a felon, and grand theft of a firearm. Additionally, there were several enhancements to these felony charges, as well as misdemeanors for grand theft of a firearm and disobeying a domestic relations court order.
During the preliminary hearing, Paradise Police Department detective Sgt. Eric Reinbold testified about the investigation. He revealed that McClintock's girlfriend, Lakeisha Barnett, had seen him with a black handgun on the morning of the incident. Barnett also recounted a phone call from McClintock on the day of the shooting, during which he sounded out of breath and mentioned that he might have shot someone. McClintock allegedly told Barnett that he had pulled the gun from his waistband and it accidentally discharged. Barnett further testified that McClintock had asked her to dispose of the gun, which was later found by police based on her description.
The court proceedings included testimonies from various witnesses and law enforcement officers. The prosecution presented evidence to support the charges against McClintock, while the defense argued against the allegations. Ultimately, the judge determined that there was sufficient evidence for the case to go to trial. McClintock pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the case proceeded through the legal system. The tragic death of Ty Barrera and the subsequent legal proceedings highlighted the impact of gun violence and the complexities of the criminal justice system.
