Mark Le Roy Tyree Jr., a 15-year-old high school student, was tragically shot and killed on June 26, 2016, in the Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The incident occurred around 8:26 p.m. while Tyree was hanging out with a 14-year-old friend in the driveway of his friend's home. A dark-colored sedan drove by, and at least one person inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Tyree multiple times.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Tyree succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:07 p.m. with gunshot wounds to his arm and chest. His friend, fortunately, was not injured in the attack.
The vehicle involved in the shooting was described as a dark, primer-gray sedan, possibly a Chevy, last seen heading east on West 92nd Street. Investigators believe the shooting may have been gang-related, although neither Tyree nor his friend were gang members. They were simply two kids spending time together in a place they often congregated with friends. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has been actively investigating the case, but witnesses were unable to provide a description of the shooter or shooters, making it challenging to identify the perpetrators.
In the wake of Tyree's death, the community and law enforcement have sought information to bring those responsible to justice. The Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau has urged anyone with information to come forward, offering anonymity through Crime Stoppers. Despite these efforts, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The senseless nature of the crime has left a lasting impact on Tyree's family and the community, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in the area.
