Barkete Shita, a 26-year-old engineering student at Fresno State University, tragically lost his life on September 29, 2016, in Fresno, California. Shita, who was originally from Ethiopia, had moved to the United States with his family in search of a better life. On the day of his death, Shita was involved in a confrontation at a gas station on Blackstone Avenue. Following this altercation, he attempted to drive away but was pursued by his assailants.
