Dennis Randall Wallace, a 53-year-old Deputy Sheriff with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, tragically lost his life on November 13, 2016, in Hughson, California. Wallace was investigating a suspicious vehicle at Fox Grove Park when he requested backup after dispatchers informed him that the vehicle was stolen. Upon the arrival of the second deputy, Wallace was found suffering from two gunshot wounds to the head, inflicted at point-blank range.
The suspect had fled the scene in the stolen vehicle and subsequently carjacked another vehicle to continue his escape.
The suspect, David Machado, was apprehended later that day by members of the Lindsay Police Department after attempting to steal a woman's purse. Machado was charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses. In March 2021, he was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 45 years to life in prison. This conviction brought some measure of closure to Wallace's family, friends, and colleagues, who had been deeply affected by his untimely death.
Wallace had served with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department for 20 years and was well-respected in his community. His death highlighted the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and underscored the importance of supporting those who serve and protect.
