Sylvia Ramos, a resident of Modesto, California, tragically lost her life on November 16, 2016. The circumstances surrounding her death were both shocking and deeply saddening. On the evening of her death, Sylvia was found in her home with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Her husband, Steven Floyd Oliver, was present at the scene and admitted to shooting her.
According to the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office, Oliver claimed that Sylvia had woken him up and asked him to shoot her, a statement he made to the responding officers who noted his intoxicated state.
The investigation revealed a history of arguments between the couple, and on the night of the incident, Oliver's daughter had called for a welfare check due to her father's incoherent and intoxicated phone call. Upon arrival, the police found Sylvia's body on the kitchen floor, and Oliver provided multiple conflicting accounts of the events leading to the shooting. Initially, he claimed he did not know the rifle was loaded, then suggested the gun went off accidentally when Sylvia placed it to her own head, and later mentioned firing a warning shot.
Oliver was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The legal proceedings culminated in a trial where, after four days of testimony, a jury found him guilty. The court also found true an enhancement that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing Sylvia's death. On May 9, 2023, Oliver was sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison, reflecting the severity of his actions and the tragic loss of Sylvia Ramos.
