Sulma Flores, a 36-year-old Latina, tragically lost her life on January 14, 2017, six days after being shot in the 17500 block of Gilmore Street in Van Nuys, Los Angeles. The incident occurred in the early hours of January 8, 2017, when Marcos Tulio Flores, aged 32, got into a heated argument with his family. During this altercation, Marcos shot Sulma Flores, his sister-in-law, before fleeing the scene.
The Los Angeles County coroner's records confirmed that Sulma succumbed to her injuries after a week-long battle for her life.
Following the shooting, Marcos Flores evaded capture for a short period. On the night of January 9, 2017, police spotted him driving his gray Acura. A high-speed chase ensued, during which Marcos was seen discarding items from his vehicle and at one point, firing a gun. The pursuit ended on the 405 Freeway in Westwood, where Marcos was eventually apprehended after being subdued by a police dog.
Marcos Flores faced multiple charges in connection with the incident. On January 17, 2017, he was charged with one count each of murder, criminal threats, fleeing police, possession of a firearm by a felon, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Additionally, he faced two counts of assault with a firearm. Marcos, who was held on a $3.3 million bail, pleaded not guilty to all charges and was scheduled to appear in court on February 21, 2017.
The case drew significant attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the subsequent police chase. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office and LAPD Valley Bureau detectives were heavily involved in the investigation.
