On January 12, 2017, Jose Luis Flores-Vargas, aged 27, was tragically killed in a shooting incident on Sunrise Street in Salinas, California. The incident occurred around 9:00 PM when Salinas Police Officers, who were in the vicinity of Garner Avenue and North Sanborn Road, heard multiple gunshots. Shortly after, a ShotSpotter activation alerted them to the 500 block of Sunrise Street. Upon arrival, officers found four victims with gunshot wounds.
Unfortunately, Jose Luis Flores-Vargas and another victim, Alejandro Ramirez, aged 25, were pronounced dead at the scene. The other two victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Initial investigations revealed that none of the victims were affiliated with gangs.
The investigation into the shooting was extensive, involving collaboration between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. Detectives followed up on every lead and reached out to the community for information. This collaborative effort led to the identification and arrest of several suspects. On January 21, 2021, arrest warrants were issued for Ryan Meza, aged 27, and Joseph Garcia, aged 25. Meza was apprehended on January 23, 2021, in the 200 block of East Alvin Drive, while Garcia was arrested on February 13, 2021, at a residence in the 300 block of West Acacia Street. Both suspects were charged with murder and attempted murder and were booked into Monterey County Jail.
Further investigations revealed that the shooting was part of a larger pattern of violence attributed to a group known as the "Murder Squad," a subset of the Norteño gang. This group was responsible for multiple homicides and attempted murders in the Salinas area. The "Murder Squad" was known for targeting rival gang members and individuals who fell out of favor with the gang. The January 12, 2017, shooting of Jose Luis Flores-Vargas and Alejandro Ramirez was identified as the first killing attributed to this group. In addition to Meza and Garcia, other members of the "Murder Squad" were also implicated in various violent crimes, leading to multiple arrests and charges under the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.
The case against the suspects involved in the murder of Jose Luis Flores-Vargas is part of a broader effort to dismantle the "Murder Squad" and address gang-related violence in Salinas. The investigation and subsequent arrests highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating gang activity and ensuring the safety of the community. The legal proceedings against the suspects are ongoing, with the potential for significant sentences if they are convicted of the charges brought against them.
