Dina Rebecca Enriquez, a 24-year-old Latina, tragically lost her life on March 10, 2017, in Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred in the Adams-Normandie neighborhood, specifically in the 3100 block of Kenwood Avenue. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Enriquez was shot and killed in her apartment. The fatal event unfolded after an argument with her longtime partner, Steven Alexis Vargas, who subsequently pulled out a gun and shot her in the bedroom of their
apartment. The couple’s two young children, aged 2 and 6, were present in the apartment at the time of the shooting. Enriquez was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 3:30 p.m.
Following the incident, Steven Alexis Vargas, a 26-year-old Latino, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office charged Vargas on March 14, 2017, with one count of murder, two counts of child abuse, one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and one count of discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. The arraignment for Vargas was initially scheduled for April 12, 2017. The case drew significant attention due to the presence of the couple’s children during the shooting, highlighting the tragic impact on the family.
The investigation into Enriquez’s death was conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Criminal Gang Homicide Division. Authorities urged anyone with additional information to come forward, offering anonymity through Crime Stoppers.
