Palms Marine Corps base. Aikens was arrested about a week after the murders at the Air Corps Ground Combat Center. The investigation revealed that Aikens had been in a sexual relationship with McKissic for over a year. He had recently purchased a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which he later gave to a fellow Marine to clean and store in a family safe. This behavior, along with his confession to a fellow Marine, led to his arrest and subsequent trial.
During the trial, Aikens denied the murders and downplayed his relationship with McKissic. However, the jury found him guilty after nearly seven days of testimony from about 20 witnesses, including Marines and McKissic's daughter. The trial concluded with a swift conviction, and Aikens was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The judge described the murders as "purely unadulterated evil" and emphasized that Aikens showed no remorse for his actions.
