Christy McKissic, aged 32, was tragically killed on March 24, 2017, in her home in Twentynine Palms, California. The incident also claimed the life of her mother, Renee Metcalf, aged 62. Both women were found shot to death in their residence on Bedouin Avenue. The discovery was made following a 911 call made at 12:03 a.m. on the day of the murders.
The investigation revealed that both women had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with McKissic being shot twice in the head and Metcalf suffering gunshot wounds to her leg, back, and head.
The case quickly led to the arrest of Rafael Aikens, a Marine stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. Aikens was apprehended about a week after the murders. During the trial, it was revealed that Aikens had confessed to a fellow Marine, stating, "I killed two people." This confession, along with other evidence, played a crucial role in his conviction.
Aikens' trial began in August 2019 and included nearly seven days of testimony from around 20 witnesses, including Marines and McKissic's 13-year-old daughter, who was 10 at the time of the murders. The jury deliberated for a short period before convicting Aikens. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The judge described the murders as "purely unadulterated evil" and emphasized that Aikens showed no remorse for his actions.
The trial also highlighted the emotional impact on the victims' families and friends. McKissic and Metcalf were remembered as beloved members of their community, and their deaths left a significant void. The case underscored the severity of the crime and the justice system's response to such heinous acts.
