Jose Gabriel Madrigal Vargas, a 23-year-old resident of Cathedral City, California, was tragically killed on March 29, 2017, in Desert Hot Springs. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when officers responded to multiple calls of shots fired. Upon arrival, they followed a blood trail to a house on the 66100 block of Sixth Street, where Vargas' body was discovered.
This location was just a few houses away from where the body of Freddy Morales, a friend of the suspect, had been found two days earlier.
The investigation revealed that Orlando Archuleta, a 28-year-old man from Desert Hot Springs, was responsible for the shooting. Archuleta believed that Vargas was involved in the killing of Morales, which led him to seek revenge. On the night of the incident, Archuleta and others confronted Vargas at the Sixth Street home. During the confrontation, shots were fired, resulting in Vargas' death and Archuleta sustaining a gunshot wound to his elbow.
