Edwin Lima, a 31-year-old correctional officer from Bakersfield, California, was tragically killed on the night of May 28, 2017. Lima was shot multiple times through the master bedroom window of his estranged wife’s apartment in northeast Bakersfield. The shooter, Rigoberto Sanchez, was also a correctional officer and the estranged husband of Lima's partner.
The incident was fueled by Sanchez's jealousy and anger over his wife moving on with her life after their separation.
On the night of the murder, Sanchez drove to his wife's apartment, broke the bedroom window with a cinder block, and opened fire on Lima and his wife. Lima was struck 17 times and died at the scene. Sanchez's wife managed to escape injury. The prosecution described the killing as a premeditated act driven by Sanchez's rage and jealousy. Sanchez claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Lima had pulled a gun on him, but this defense was not accepted by the jury.
Following the shooting, Sanchez fled to Mexico, where he stayed with relatives until he was tracked down by authorities weeks later. He was arrested and brought back to the United States to face trial. In September 2018, a Kern County jury found Sanchez guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and several other felonies. He was sentenced to 80 years to life in prison. Sanchez's defense team argued that the conviction was wrongful and planned to appeal the verdict, but the appellate court upheld the conviction, finding no merit in the claims of prosecutorial misconduct or judicial errors.
