Jesus Mireles-Mecinas, a 48-year-old Latino man, was tragically shot in MacArthur Park near West 7th and South Lake streets in the Westlake area of Los Angeles. The incident occurred around 12:05 a.m. on June 11, 2017. Mireles-Mecinas, who was also known as Jose Morales, was found with multiple gunshot wounds near his belongings in the park, where he had apparently been living.
He was immediately taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries three days later, on June 14, 2017.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office reported that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, with additional significant injuries to his right arm and chest. The manner of death was classified as a homicide. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an investigation into the shooting, with detectives from the Rampart Division leading the case. Despite their efforts, the attacker or attackers managed to flee the scene on foot, and no immediate arrests were made.
