Carl Holman, a 43-year-old resident of San Francisco, was tragically shot and killed on June 23, 2017, in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. The incident occurred early in the morning on the first block of Turk Street, between Mason and Taylor. Holman was found by San Francisco Police officers responding to reports of a shooting at around 5:05 AM. Upon arrival, they discovered Holman lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of paramedics from the San Francisco Fire Department, Holman succumbed to his injuries at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
The investigation into Holman's death was swift. San Francisco Police Homicide investigators quickly identified a suspect, John Muhammed, a 45-year-old resident of San Francisco. Muhammed was apprehended on June 25, 2017, by the SFPD Gang Task Force and Bayview Station plainclothes officers. He was arrested at approximately 4:30 PM on Third Street and Palou Avenue in the Bayview District. Muhammed was subsequently booked into San Francisco County Jail on charges of felony murder, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.
Further details revealed that Holman was working on a cleaning crew near the Powell Street BART station when he was attacked. The assailant reportedly pulled up in a car and shot Holman, who was performing his duties at the time. This incident highlighted the ongoing issues of violence in the Tenderloin area, a neighborhood known for its high crime rates.
John Muhammed, the suspect in Holman's murder, had a criminal history that included a conviction for vehicular manslaughter in 2002 and possession of a firearm by a felon in January 2016. Following his arrest, Muhammed was charged with murder and other related offenses. He was scheduled to be arraigned on July 21, 2017. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the location where it occurred, prompting calls for increased safety measures in the Tenderloin district.
