Deputy Sheriff Robert Allan French, aged 52, tragically lost his life on August 30, 2017, in Sacramento, California. Deputy French was a dedicated member of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, serving for 21 years. On the day of his death, he was involved in an auto theft investigation at the Ramada Inn on Auburn Boulevard. The incident began when members of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Auto Theft Task Force apprehended two women following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.
The task force then proceeded to search a hotel room linked to the suspects. As officers knocked on the door and announced their presence, a male suspect inside the room opened fire with a rifle, injuring two California Highway Patrol investigators.
The suspect, later identified as Thomas Littlecloud, continued to exchange gunfire with law enforcement officers. Deputy French responded to the scene and engaged in the shootout. Despite being mortally wounded by a bullet that penetrated his patrol car and struck him in an area not protected by his vest, Deputy French continued to return fire, allowing other officers to seek cover. Littlecloud attempted to flee in another stolen vehicle, leading officers on a pursuit before crashing. He continued to exchange gunfire with officers before being taken into custody. Littlecloud later succumbed to his injuries sustained during the multiple shootouts.
The investigation into Deputy French's death revealed that Littlecloud had a history of criminal activity and was on probation at the time of the incident. His girlfriend, Priscilla Prendez, was also arrested in connection with the case. The shootout and subsequent investigation highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the bravery exhibited by Deputy French in the line of duty.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and the community mourned the loss of Deputy French.
