Brandon Campbell, aged 31, tragically lost his life on September 28, 2017, in Sacramento, California. On that fateful day, Sacramento police officers responded to a call on the 5100 block of Ehrhardt Avenue, where they found Campbell lying in the street with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Campbell had been waiting outside a friend's house when the incident occurred.
According to prosecutors, the suspect, Lakquan Solomon, drove by Campbell, and after an exchange of words, Solomon initially drove away but then made a U-turn and returned. Solomon then shot Campbell at close range with a 12-gauge shotgun.
The investigation into Campbell's death took some time to yield results. Solomon was not identified as the suspect until February 2019, although he had already been in custody since November 2017 for an unrelated incident. Surveillance footage and other evidence eventually led to Solomon being charged with Campbell's murder. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office announced that Solomon had been convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of Brandon Campbell. Solomon faced a maximum sentence of 90 years to life in prison and was set to be sentenced on June 11, 2021.
The case highlighted the violent activities associated with gang affiliations in the area, as Solomon was a validated member of the Oak Park Blood gang. The conviction brought some closure to Campbell's family and friends, who had been mourning his loss and seeking justice for over three years. The legal proceedings underscored the challenges law enforcement faces in solving gang-related crimes and the importance of community cooperation in bringing perpetrators to justice.
