Christopher Guadron, a 27-year-old resident of Bakersfield, California, tragically lost his life on December 9, 2017, as a result of a shooting incident at Heritage Park in east Bakersfield. On that fateful morning, Bakersfield Police officers responded to reports of a shooting around 9:30 a.m. The incident occurred during a confrontation involving a group of people, which escalated when someone pulled out a firearm.
Guadron was shot in the chest and later succumbed to his injuries at Kern Medical. Additionally, a woman involved in the altercation was shot in the abdomen, though her injuries were deemed minor.
The investigation into Guadron's death quickly identified Guillermo Soto, a 19-year-old member of the Eastside Bakers gang, as the primary suspect. Soto, who was on probation at the time and had a history of felony convictions and gang-related arrests, was alleged to have been involved in the fight that led to the shooting. According to police documents, Soto and his longtime girlfriend were present at the scene, and the altercation reportedly began due to bullying issues involving the girlfriend. Soto claimed that he and his girlfriend were "jumped" by the other group and that the other party fired the shots. Despite his denial of showing or firing a gun, Soto was arrested on December 10, 2017, on multiple charges, including homicide, attempted murder, assault with a firearm, and gang-related offenses.
The legal proceedings that followed saw Soto pleading not guilty to the charges. During his court appearances, Soto maintained his innocence, asserting that he acted in self-defense. The case went to trial, and in May 2019, a Kern County jury acquitted Soto of murder, attempted murder, and other serious charges. The jury found him guilty only of possession of a firearm by a felon, for which he faced a maximum sentence of three years in prison. The prosecution expressed disappointment with the verdict but acknowledged the jury's decision, which was likely influenced by the self-defense argument presented during the trial.
