Edward Rodrigo Medina, a 27-year-old resident of Bakersfield, California, was reported missing by his family on April 9, 2021. He was last seen on March 7, 2021, and his vehicle was found abandoned in the 1700 block of East Planz Road. On April 12, 2021, Medina's body was discovered in an orchard in the 6000 block of Di Giorgio Road. He had been shot to death, with a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation into his death revealed that Medina had been involved in a dispute over a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck, which he had acquired through a trade involving an enclosed trailer.
The investigation led to the arrest of two men, Manuel Zamora and Fabian Villarreal, both residents of Bakersfield. Witnesses reported that the dispute over the pickup truck had escalated, with Medina wanting to return the truck due to issues with it, while the man who traded the truck with Medina suspected the trailer Medina provided was stolen. The situation culminated in Medina being shot in front of the home of the truck's previous owner. Villarreal admitted to helping dispose of Medina's body, which was found in the orchard with tire tread marks matching those of the pickup truck.
Both Zamora and Villarreal were charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Kern County Jail. The case against them included witness testimonies and physical evidence linking them to the crime scene. The next court hearing for Zamora and Villarreal was scheduled for July 12, 2021.
