Mayra Karina Portillo-Moreno, a 29-year-old resident of Willowbrook, California, tragically lost her life on April 21, 2018. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at her home on Grandee Avenue. According to reports, Mayra and her longtime boyfriend, Juan Antonio Rodriguez, were involved in a heated argument. During the altercation, Rodriguez retrieved a firearm and shot Mayra multiple times in the upper torso.
The couple's 8-year-old daughter was also struck by a bullet but survived the critical injuries after being taken to the hospital by Rodriguez. Mayra was pronounced dead at the scene by the authorities.
Following the incident, Juan Antonio Rodriguez was arrested on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He was subsequently charged with murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and two counts of child neglect and abandonment. Rodriguez pleaded not guilty to the charges initially but later, in March 2019, he pleaded no contest to the charges. He was sentenced to 24 years to life in prison for the murder of Mayra and the assault on their daughter. The case highlighted the severe consequences of domestic violence and brought attention to the need for support and intervention in such situations.
