5 year old hides while parents are murdered In the early moments of January 17, 2011, a violent home invasion in New Orleans East shattered a family and left a community in mourning. Kenan Breaud, a 36-year-old African-American man, was at his home on Petit Bayou Lane with his fiancée, Felicia Hughes, and their five-year-old son. Shortly after midnight, a knock at the door prompted Breaud to investigate. He was met by five men, and after a brief exchange, he attempted to retreat back into his home.
The intruders opened fire, shooting Breaud multiple times in the hallway.
The violence escalated as the assailants then entered the bedroom where Felicia Hughes was with her young son. In a final act of maternal protection, she instructed her child to hide. The boy concealed himself by the side of the bed, a move that would ultimately save his life. The intruders then fatally shot Hughes. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found both Kenan Breaud and Felicia Hughes deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Miraculously, their five-year-old son was physically unharmed, having remained hidden during the horrific events.
In the aftermath of the double homicide, the New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation. Despite the presence of five perpetrators, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an open and active investigation.
