Lamarion Upchurch, a 15-year-old from Long Beach, California, tragically lost his life on May 13, 2018. Known affectionately as "Lil BZ," Lamarion was a beloved member of the "Tommy the Clown" dance crew, where he was celebrated for his vibrant personality and dancing skills. On the night of his death, Lamarion and three other teenagers were walking on West Manchester Avenue in South Los Angeles when they were approached by two men.
The suspects asked Lamarion where he was from before opening fire, resulting in Lamarion's death at the scene and injuries to the other three teenagers. The incident occurred near the 110 Harbor Freeway, and the suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
The investigation into Lamarion's death revealed that the shooting was a targeted attack. Detectives identified the suspects as Cristian Ivan Macias, Edwin Federico Loza, and Nancy De La Rocha. Macias and Loza were alleged gang members, while De La Rocha was believed to be a gang associate who served as the driver during the attack. The motive behind the shooting was linked to gang-related activities, and the suspects were charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted murder. The case drew significant attention due to the young age of the victims and the brutal nature of the crime.
In July 2023, after a lengthy legal process, Macias, Loza, and De La Rocha were convicted of the charges against them. The jury found them guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Lamarion Upchurch and another 15-year-old, Monyae Jackson, who succumbed to his injuries two days after the shooting. Additionally, they were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of attempted murder for the injuries sustained by the other teenagers. The special circumstance allegation of multiple murders was also upheld, leading to the defendants facing life sentences without the possibility of parole. The convictions brought some measure of justice to the families of the victims, who had endured years of grief and uncertainty.
The tragic death of Lamarion Upchurch highlighted the pervasive issue of gang violence in Los Angeles and the devastating impact it has on communities. Lamarion's family and friends remembered him as a joyful and talented young man with a bright future ahead of him. His involvement in the dance community and his popularity among peers underscored the loss felt by many. The case also served as a reminder of the importance of addressing gang violence and supporting efforts to create safer environments for young people in urban areas.
