Devante Mendez, a 24-year-old man from Los Angeles, was tragically shot and killed on October 3, 2018. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. in the 5300 block of South Figueroa Street in the Vermont Square neighborhood. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Mendez was standing on the sidewalk when a vehicle, described as a light-colored sedan, approached him. A person in the back passenger seat of the vehicle opened fire, striking Mendez.
The vehicle then fled north on South Figueroa Street. Mendez was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:02 p.m.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and Mendez was not known to be affiliated with any gangs. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been investigating the case, but as of now, no arrests have been made.
