On December 24, 2018, Noe Reyes, a 25-year-old resident of Moreno Valley, California, was tragically killed in a shooting incident. The incident occurred around 5:23 p.m. near the Rio Rancho Supermall complex on Perris Boulevard. Reyes and another man, whose identity was not disclosed, were both shot and subsequently transported to Riverside University Medical Center. Unfortunately, Reyes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m.

The investigation into Reyes' death quickly led to the arrest of two 18-year-old suspects, Carl Johnson and Marius Metoyer, both residents of Moreno Valley. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department, in collaboration with the Moreno Valley Police Department, conducted a thorough investigation which included serving a search warrant at a residence on East Williams Street in Banning. During the search, several firearms and additional evidence were seized, linking Johnson and Metoyer to the crime.
Johnson and Metoyer were charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and a special circumstance allegation of committing a murder for the benefit of a criminal street gang. They also faced gun and great bodily injury allegations. Both suspects were held without bail, with Johnson being detained at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta and Metoyer at the Indio Jail. The pair made a joint court appearance before Superior Court Judge David Gunn, who appointed them a public defender and scheduled their arraignment.
The case against Johnson and Metoyer highlighted the ongoing issue of gang-related violence in the area.
