Joe Anthony Ruiz, a 32-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on August 29, 2019, in Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in the 8110 block of South Broadway in the Florence neighborhood. Ruiz was working as a clerk in an unauthorized marijuana shop when two individuals entered the establishment and opened fire. The suspects, identified as Iaushee Smith, 24, and Tyre Lavell Sherman, 23, fled the scene on foot, heading south on Broadway.
Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:20 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
The investigation into Ruiz's death led to significant developments. Both Smith and Sherman were apprehended and faced serious charges. Smith was charged with one count of murder with a gang allegation and an allegation that he committed the murder during an attempted robbery. Additionally, Smith faced an allegation of using a handgun as a deadly weapon. Both suspects were also charged with one count of attempted second-degree robbery with a gang allegation. They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were scheduled to appear in court on October 7, 2019.
