Jaime Valdovinos, a 25-year-old resident of Los Banos, California, tragically lost his life on September 26, 2019, in Oakland, California. The incident occurred at the Fruitvale Shopping Center, where Valdovinos was fatally shot during a robbery. According to police reports, the shooting took place around 7:10 PM in the parking lot of the shopping center. Officers responding to the scene found Valdovinos unresponsive, and despite their efforts, they were unable to save him.
The investigation revealed that Valdovinos and another individual were robbed of a large amount of marijuana, and during the struggle to retrieve it, Valdovinos was shot.
The primary suspect in the case, Omar Rojo, was arrested shortly after the incident. Rojo, who was 20 years old at the time, was charged with murder and second-degree robbery. Witnesses and surveillance footage identified Rojo as the shooter. According to an arrest affidavit, Rojo admitted to setting up the robbery to steal the marijuana and firing the gun three times in Valdovinos' direction while inside a car. The investigation also led to the discovery of the clothes Rojo wore during the robbery and the gun used in the shooting at a residence connected to him.
In addition to Rojo, another individual, Jose Antonio Alvarez, was implicated in the crime. Both Rojo and Alvarez were initially charged with murder and robbery. However, they later entered no contest pleas to voluntary manslaughter. In late October 2023, both men were sentenced to 16 years in prison for their involvement in the fatal shooting. The plea deal included a court order for both defendants to stay away from the surviving victim and to not possess firearms after their release from prison. The case highlights the dangers associated with illegal drug transactions and the severe consequences of violent crime.
