On August 24, 2020, Alex Renee Cardona, aged 27, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in North Sacramento, California. The incident occurred when Christopher Berger, a member of a rival gang, drove up to a residence where Cardona and three other men were standing outside. Berger fired 11 shots from a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, striking Cardona in the head and fatally wounding him. The other three men were also shot multiple times but survived the attack.
Following the shooting, Berger attempted to cover his tracks by reporting his vehicle as stolen. However, the vehicle was later recovered, and forensic evidence, including matching shell casings, linked Berger to the crime.
The investigation into Cardona's death revealed that the shooting was gang-related, with Berger and the victims belonging to rival factions. Eight months after the murder, an unregistered firearm was found during a vehicle stop, and ballistic tests confirmed it was the weapon used in the shooting.
