On May 23, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Rancho Cordova, California, resulting in the deaths of 72-year-old William J. Konvalin and his wife, 69-year-old Marylou S. Bailey Konvalin. The couple was fatally shot by their son, 38-year-old Thomas Konvalin, in their residence on Hartselle Way.
The sequence of events began around 1:15 a.m. when Marylou Konvalin called 911, reporting that she had been shot. Upon arrival, Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies and Rancho Cordova Police officers found Marylou unresponsive near the front door; she was pronounced dead at the scene. Inside the home, they discovered William Konvalin, also deceased from gunshot wounds. Their son, Thomas, was observed in the doorway but refused to comply with officers' commands, leading to a tense standoff.
After approximately three hours of unsuccessful negotiation attempts, law enforcement deployed an armored vehicle to approach the residence. At around 4:15 a.m., Thomas emerged from a back window armed with a rifle. In response, two SWAT deputies fired at him three times, resulting in his death at the scene. The deputies involved were subsequently placed on administrative leave, pending a standard investigation into the use of lethal force.
The motive behind Thomas's actions remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. This tragic event has left the community in shock, as authorities continue to search for answers regarding the circumstances that led to the deaths of William and Marylou Konvalin.
