On March 21, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m., a shooting occurred at the University/65th Street light rail station in Sacramento, California, resulting in the death of 25-year-old Levell Murphy. Two other individuals, a man and a woman, sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital; the woman's condition was reported as stable, while the man's condition remained unknown.
Following the shooting, two suspects fled the scene and committed a carjacking near a fitness center on Folsom Boulevard, close to the light rail station. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in a Sacramento State University parking lot.
On April 11, 2024, Sacramento police arrested two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, in connection with the carjacking. They were booked into juvenile hall on felony carjacking charges. The police indicated that these individuals are also suspects in the homicide of Murphy, and the case was to be presented to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office for potential additional charges.
The incident prompted concerns among Sacramento State University students, particularly regarding the adequacy of communication from campus authorities during such emergencies. Some students felt that more immediate alerts, beyond email notifications, were necessary to ensure campus safety.
