Juan Diaz-Ochoa, a 21-year-old resident of Oakland, California, tragically lost his life on October 14, 2020, in a shooting incident that also claimed the life of his friend, Jorge Martinez, 19, and left another 18-year-old man injured. The incident occurred around 12:47 p.m. in the 1900 block of 84th Avenue in East Oakland. According to police reports, the three men were friends and were involved in a physical confrontation on the street with several other individuals.
The altercation escalated when at least one person opened fire, hitting all three men. Martinez died at the scene, while Diaz-Ochoa succumbed to his injuries later at a hospital. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, and no arrests were made at the time. Authorities offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooter.
Further investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving the theft of a gun. Witnesses testified that Jorge Martinez had stolen a firearm from a man known as "Billy Bob," and the two had agreed to settle the matter through a street fight. However, the situation quickly spiraled out of control. During the fight, another individual, Hasan Dbouk, allegedly became agitated and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Martinez and Diaz-Ochoa, and injuring the third man. Dbouk, who was 28 years old at the time, was later arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping.
Dbouk's arrest came after a dramatic standoff with police on October 22, 2020, when he took hostages at a shoe store on High Street in Oakland. During the standoff, Dbouk fired shots into the wall and demanded cigarettes and a cell phone charger from the police. He eventually released the hostages and surrendered. In addition to the charges related to the shooting, Dbouk faced charges of kidnapping for ransom, false imprisonment by violence, and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. He remained in custody without bail, awaiting trial.
The case highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and gang-related conflicts in Oakland.
